La ferveur religieuse des j\u00e9suites procure \u00e0 Pierre Paul Rubens une merveilleuse opportunit\u00e9 de r\u00e9aliser une s\u00e9rie de 39 tableaux de toute beaut\u00e9. Le pr\u00e9positus de la maison professe, le P\u00e8re Jacobus Tirinus, compose une liste provisoire de 34 sujets. Le contrat \u2013 d\u2019une valeur de 7000 florins \u2013 avec le grand-ma\u00eetre Anversois est sign\u00e9 le 29 mars 1620. Rubens doit r\u00e9aliser les esquisses et peut en confier l\u2019ex\u00e9cution \u00e0 son atelier, mais il a l\u2019obligation d\u2019apporter d\u2019\u00e9ventuelles corrections de sa main. Antoine Van Dyck, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 21 ans, est mentionn\u00e9 comme \u00e9tant le principal collaborateur et est charg\u00e9 la transposition des dessins de Rubens \u00e0 taille r\u00e9elle, mais il s\u2019en ira \u00e0 la cour de Jacques I<sup>er<\/sup>, roi d\u2019Angleterre encore avant la fin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. De ces grands modelli peints \u00e0 l\u2019huile, 22 sont encore conserv\u00e9s ainsi que 17 \u00e9tudes en grisaille, dispers\u00e9s dans des collections d\u2019art \u00e0 travers le monde entier. Les commanditaires cherchent \u00e0 p\u00e9n\u00e9trer les visiteurs de l\u2019amour de Dieu qui, pendant des si\u00e8cles, a voulu mener l\u2019humanit\u00e9 vers un bonheur c\u00e9leste. Chaque trav\u00e9e du plafond horizontal montre un moment important. Tout d\u2019abord, il y avait le myst\u00e8re du mal avec lequel tout \u00eatre humain est forc\u00e9ment confront\u00e9. Le premier dessin, l\u2019expulsion d\u2019Adam et \u00c8ve du paradis terrestre a \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9e par la chute des anges rebelles. En r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 ce mal, la bont\u00e9 Divine se r\u00e9pand avec audace dans son Fils. Les sc\u00e8nes les plus importantes de la vie de J\u00e9sus \u00e9taient encore abord\u00e9es selon la typologie m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire chaque fois pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9es d\u2019une sc\u00e8ne parall\u00e8le de l\u2019Ancien Testament. Le cycle se terminait plein d\u00a0\u00bbesp\u00e9rance par la r\u00e9alisation du r\u00eave de Dieu : Marie, toujours pr\u00eate \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre positivement \u00e0 une invitation de Dieu, est la premi\u00e8re personne humaine \u00e0 vivre le bonheur \u00e9ternel, symbolis\u00e9 par son couronnement dans les cieux. La mission de J\u00e9sus se poursuit dans l\u2019\u00c9glise, repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au plafond des nefs lat\u00e9rales du rez-de-chauss\u00e9e par une s\u00e9rie de saints, la parit\u00e9 entre hommes et femmes \u00e9tant respect\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Le plafond de la trav\u00e9e ouest, \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e principale, offre aux j\u00e9suites la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019exprimer leur fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 aux autorit\u00e9s s\u00e9culi\u00e8res supr\u00eames. Les j\u00e9suites trouveront une vraie solution diplomatique pour le nombre impair de cassettes. L\u2019archiduc re\u00e7oit en la personne de son patron (masculin) saint Albert la place d\u2019honneur qui lui appartient au milieu, tandis qu\u2019il est flanqu\u00e9 des deux saints patrons (f\u00e9minins) de son \u00e9pouse : Elisabeth (en espagnol \u2018Isabella\u2019) et Clara. L\u2019admiration m\u00e8ne \u00e0 la copie et \u00e0 l\u2019inspiration. Sir George Chaworth, envoy\u00e9 du roi James I, est fou d\u2019admiration pour les peintures des plafonds.
