In 1399 the first yearly Our Lady\u2019s Procession was held. This was fixed on the Sunday after Our Lady\u2019s Assumption (15 August) and was one of the festive highlights of the year for the Antwerpians. Albrecht D\u00fcrer, among others, testified to it. So as to avoid that playful aspects would become predominant, in 1761 the parade was split up into a profane pageant and a religious procession. The latter went through the streets until the 1960\u2019s and has since then be replaced by a procession inside the cathedral.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b460783 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b460783\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new Guild of Our Lady\u2019s Praise looked forward to the moment Our Lady\u2019s Chapel was finished in the northern aisle in 1478. In the beginning it only consisted of the uttermost eastern bay, where the boss (ca. 1481) represents\u00a0<em>The Annunciation<\/em>, which is the election of Mary. During the 1566 Iconoclast Fury the statue of the Virgin Mary was badly damaged, but in 1581 it escaped total destruction during the Calvinist Rule because it had been bricked up behind a wall in a guild member\u2019s house. The 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century statue of Our Lady also survived the French Revolutionary Rule because it had been hidden in a private cellar. On 15 August 1899, at the occasion of the fifth centenary of Our Lady\u2019s Procession, cardinal archbishop Petrus Goossens came in the name of Pope Leo XIII to solemnly crown the statue. Karel Ooms painted the representation of this joyful event in the medallion of a processional banner that now decorates the chapel. From the 300 rings and the hundreds of precious stones that were donated by Antwerp believers, goldsmith Jos Junes made an invaluable crown. Only at the occasion of the feast of Our Lady\u2019s Assumption, on 15 August, the crown is put onto the statue. Underneath four white marble reliefs by Artus II Quellin represent important scenes from Mary\u2019s life:\u00a0<em>The Annunciation, The visit to Elizabeth, The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Assumption<\/em>. They show how also Baroque sculpture was indebted to Rubens for formation of pictures. Fortunately their bozetti have been preserved in the Belgian Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels. To have an idea of how the altar would be developed above the cornice and to add a more festive aspect to the consecration of the altar and the additional devotional picture with the representation of the altar, a painted canvas with the project of Peter I Verbrugghen was hung above the cornice in the same year. In the altar crowning God the Father hands the crown to Mary. Angels that surround him each hold a Marian symbol from Our Lady\u2019s litany: on top three celestial bodies \u2013 on the left\u00a0<em>Beautiful as the moon<\/em>\u00a0(Song of Songs 6:10a), in the centre\u00a0<em>Resplendent as the sun<\/em>\u00a0(Song of Songs 6:10b) and on the right a star, which may refer to\u00a0<em>The Morning Star shining among clouds<\/em>\u00a0(Sirach 50:6) as well as to\u00a0<em>Star of the sea<\/em>. Underneath, closer to the ground, there are two buildings: on the left a house \u2013\u00a0<em>Golden house<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Wisdom has built her house<\/em>\u00a0(Prov. 9:1) \u2013 and on the right a tower:\u00a0<em>Tower of ivory<\/em>\u00a0(Song of songs 7:5) or\u00a0<em>David\u2019s tower<\/em>\u00a0(Song of songs 4:4).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1825 Jacob II van der Neer reconstructed the original Baroque altar, for which \u2013 thanks to their being confiscated for the \u00c9cole Centrale \u2013 he could reuse the original columns and predella reliefs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cedf6c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cedf6c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The stained glass windows in the northern aisle<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b5817b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b5817b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1878, on the occasion of their fourth centenary, the Guild of Our Lady\u2019s Praise wanted to colour the chapel full length with a series of five neo Gothic stained-glass windows. They were designed by Pieter Van de Ouderaa, after the instructions of city archivist Pieter Genard, and executed by the Stalins \u2013 Janssens workshop (1878-1885). They sketch the Marian devotion inside this church, partly by representing some important historical events; from east to west:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b0fbcc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-accordion\" data-id=\"b0fbcc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"accordion.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1851\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1851\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">Our Lady, patron saint of Antwerp<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1851\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1851\"><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[1] First in the row (1878) and also literally closest to the <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-64604 glossary-cat-276\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/en\/glossary\/altar\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"glossary-only-link\">altar<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hidden glossary-tooltip-content clearfix\"><span class=\"glossary-tooltip-text\">The altar is the central piece of furniture used in the Eucharist. Originally, an altar used to be a sacrificial table. This fits in with the theological view that Jesus sacrificed himself, through his death on the cross, to redeem mankind, as symbolically depicted in the painting &#8220;The Adoration of the Lamb&#8221; by the Van Eyck brothers. In modern times the altar is often described as &#8220;the table of the Lord&#8221;. Here the altar refers to the table at which Jesus and his disciples were seated at the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. Just as Jesus and his disciples did then, the priest and the faithful gather around this table with bread and wine.<\/span><\/span><\/span>, is\u00a0<strong><em>Our Lady, patron <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-64546 glossary-cat-277\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/en\/glossary\/saint\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"glossary-only-link\">saint<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hidden glossary-tooltip-content clearfix\"><span class=\"glossary-tooltip-text\">This is a title that the Church bestows on a deceased person who has lived a particularly righteous and faithful life. In the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Church, saints may be venerated (not worshipped). Several saints are also martyrs.<\/span><\/span><\/span> of Antwerp<\/em><\/strong>, a donation of king Leopold II and queen Marie Henriette, which is hence called \u2018the Royal Window\u2019. Each of the then nine Belgian provinces are represented by their patron saints. Considering Mary\u2019s significance as the most important saint, she is in the centre \u2013 incidentally next to her husband Joseph, who is the patron saint of Belgium. It may be part of a larger entity such as a hospital, school, or an alms-house, or it may stand alone.<br> An enclosed part of a church with its own altar.<br><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-63862 glossary-cat-272\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/en\/glossary\/peter\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"glossary-only-link\">Petrus<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hidden glossary-tooltip-content clearfix\"><span class=\"glossary-tooltip-text\">He was one of the twelve apostles. He was a fisherman who, together with his brother Andrew, was called by Jesus to follow Him. He is the disciple most often mentioned In the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. His original name was Simon. He got his nickname Peter (i.e. rock) from Jesus, who, according to tradition, said that He would build His Church on this rock.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Heesmans, and his wife Eugenia Ceulemans, who, according to the caption, had a great devotion for Our Lady of Lourdes, which also shows in the representations in the tracery. In a late Gothic church interior, in which one can recognize Saint-Joseph\u2019s Chapel in the <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-63841 glossary-cat-271\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/en\/glossary\/cathedral\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"glossary-only-link\">cathedral<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hidden glossary-tooltip-content clearfix\"><span class=\"glossary-tooltip-text\">The main church of a diocese, where the bishop&#8217;s seat is.<\/span><\/span><\/span>, the founders of the guild are <span class=\"glossary-tooltip glossary-term-64571 glossary-cat-277\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"glossary-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/topa.be\/en\/glossary\/blessed\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"glossary-only-link\">blessed<\/a><\/span><span class=\"hidden glossary-tooltip-content clearfix\"><span class=\"glossary-tooltip-text\">Used of a person who has been beatified. Beatification precedes canonisation and means likewise that the Church recognises that this deceased person has lived a particularly righteous and faithful life.
