Saint Walburgis Church
Modernistic aisleless churchRectangular church building without aisles. Most large chapels in Antwerp (such as the so-called Emperor’s Chapel and the so-called Shoemakers’ Chapel) have the shape of an aisleless church. Also, most of the churches that were built in the second half of the 20th century are aisleless. (1938) in the ‘New Objectivity’ style. It is an example of a ‘comprehensive work of art’, designed after the ideas of the ‘Pelgrimbeweging’ (Pilgrim’s movement). This goes for the building (architects Flor Van Reeth and Jan Smits) as well as for the colourful stained glass windows (Eugeen Yoors). The austere stone sculpture (Simon Goossens) and the silver works of art (Rie Haan) strongly support the liturgical function.
