In 1755 the original Gothic tower collapsed and was replaced by the present baroque tower with an open wooden lantern. True to its symbolic nature this 58 m tall tower also points to God, in Whom man – ultimately – finds his real destination. During the struggle for Belgian independence the tower was used as an observation post by King Leopold I to keep an eye on the Dutch occupying forces in the South Castle. To avoid a repetition of the 1755 disaster, the lantern was rebuilt in 1968-‘75.
